How to make your interior feel warmer without buying a single thing

How to make your interior feel warmer without buying a single thing

When a room feels cold, our first instinct is almost always to add something. More cushions, more decoration, more layers, more stuff. But very often, that’s not what the space actually needs.

The real change happens much earlier, and it has nothing to do with styling. It’s about colour.

Undertones change everything

A cool grey can feel modern and crisp, but it can also feel distant when it’s not properly balanced. Take that same grey with a warmer undertone and suddenly it feels softer, more inviting, more human. Even white works this way. Some whites are sharp and architectural, while others are creamy and cosy. Choose the wrong one and your room can feel cold without you quite knowing why.

Why I keep coming back to muted tones

Powder pink, soft clay, earthy greens, warm taupe. I use them all the time, for one simple reason: they don’t demand attention. They sit quietly in the background and bring everything together. You walk into the room and it just feels right, without being able to pinpoint exactly why.

And warmth doesn’t only come from the obvious warm colours. It’s about how a colour behaves in a space: in the light, next to your materials, across different surfaces. A muted shade can do more for the atmosphere of a room than a space full of objects ever could.

And that’s really the whole point. The interiors that stay with you aren’t the ones with the most stuff. They’re the spaces that simply feel right, without looking like they’re trying too hard.
