The detail that changes everything: your ceiling

The detail that changes everything: your ceiling

I still find it strange that we automatically paint ceilings white. It’s become such a reflex that we barely question it anymore. White ceiling, done, next. Yet it’s one of the largest surfaces in a room, and one of the most influential when it comes to atmosphere.

Ignoring it is a huge missed opportunity. Because the moment you stop treating the ceiling as a neutral backdrop and start seeing it as a proper part of the design, the entire room changes.

Start small: a tinted white

Even a small change can make a big difference. A bright, cool white ceiling can feel harsh or disconnected from the rest of the room. Swap it for a tinted white, something warmer or softer, and the space instantly feels more balanced. The light behaves differently and the edges feel less harsh. It’s subtle, but you notice it immediately.

Go further: use the same colour on walls and ceiling

For a more immersive approach, use the same colour on both the walls and ceiling. The visual break between the surfaces disappears and the room reads as one continuous volume. This works particularly well in smaller spaces. Bedrooms instantly feel more cocooning, hallways more intentional and bathrooms take on an almost architectural simplicity.

Or make it a statement

Then there’s the opposite approach, which I love just as much: turning the ceiling into the statement. In an otherwise neutral room, a coloured ceiling adds an element of surprise without making the space feel busy. It subtly draws the eye upwards and changes the proportions of the room without adding a single object. It’s one of the easiest ways to add character without overdoing it.

It really comes down to this: a ceiling isn’t empty space. It’s part of the atmosphere. And once you start seeing it that way, white becomes just one option among many, rather than the default.
